Eight Lady Aztecs Earn Post-Season Honors
The Sunset League champion Aztecs had eight players recognized as All-League performers. Senior Jackie Munoz, juniors Kailyn Johnson and Kristin Scharkey, and freshman Kelsie Roth earned First Team honors, while seniors Jordyn Bohon, Ashley MacQueen, Chelsie Schaal and junior Chelsey Anderson earned Second Team honors. Roth was named Sunset League Rookie of the Year. Scharkey and Munoz also earned Second Team All-County honors, while Scharkey was named First Team All-CIF and Johnson was named Second Team All-CIF.

Simi Valley Ends Esperanza's CIF Playoff Run
Simi Valley showed why it deserved the No. 1 seed in the CIF-SS Division I playoffs with an 8-4 victory over Sunset League champion Esperanza in the quarterfinals on Monday at Esperanza High. After falling behind 8-0, the Aztecs put together one final stand with a four-run rally in the bottom of the sixth. Kailyn Johnson hit a two-run homer to right, Ashley MacQueen ripped a solo home run to left and Vanessa Weaver added an RBI double during the outburst. Esperanza ends its season with a 23-6-1 record.

Extra Inning Victory Over La Sierra Propels Aztecs Into CIF Quarterfinals Against Top Ranked Simi Valley
Trea Steele (pictured) singled home Ashley MacQueen, who had doubled, in the top of the eighth innings to lift Esperanza to a 2-1 extra inning victory over La Sierra in the second round of the CIF-SS Division I playoffs. Next up for the Aztecs: a CIF quarter final matchup with nationally ranked Simi Valley, the top seeded team in Division I.

Aztecs Advance to CIF Second Round With 6-3 Win
The Aztecs defeated visiting Orange Lutheran 6-3 on Friday in the opening round of the CIF-SS Division I playoffs. The Esperanza offense erupted for six runs in the fifth inning to blow open a scoreless game. Trea Steele led off the fifth inning with a solo home run to ignite the rally. Kailyn Johnson (pictured) went 2 for 4 with two doubles, a run and two RBIs and Ashley MacQueen went 2 for 3 with two doubles and one RBI for the Aztecs. Esperanza will play La Sierra in the second round.

Esperanza Beats Los Al to Clinch Sunset League Crown
The Aztecs rallied from an early 6-0 deficit by scoring all nine runs in the final four innings, including a 5-run sixth inning, to stun the Griffins 9-7 and win the league title.

Lady Aztecs Defeat Edison 7-1 to Set Up Showdown with Rival Los Alamitos for League Title
Ashley MacQueen hit a solo home run in the Aztecs three-run sixth inning, and Chelsey Anderson scattered six hits and struck out six to earn the complete game victory. Kristin Scharkey, Trea Steele and Kelsey Roth each collected two hits for the Aztecs. Next up: a showdown with Los Alamitos to determine the Sunset League champion

Anderson Strikes Back to Give Aztecs Win Over Marina
Chelsey Anderson shook off the quick strike and began delivering her own. After allowing a leadoff home run Thursday afternoon, Esperanza's junior pitcher responded with nine strikeouts and the No. 8 Aztecs came back to defeat Marina, 4-1. Jackie Munoz went 2 for 3 with a double and Ashley MacQueen added two hits, including a triple, and had an RBI. The Aztecs (7-1 in league) remained in first place with two key games next week standing between the Aztecs and a league title. The Aztecs play host to Edison on Tuesday, then visit Los Alamitos on Wednesday

No. 8 Lady Aztecs Improve to 6-1 in League Play After Defeating Fountain Valley, 7-2
Kailyn Johnson's 3-run homer in the top of the third inning gave Esperanza the lead for good against the host Barons. The Aztecs scored four runs in the top of the 7th inning to break open a tight game. Kristin Scharkey added three hits, while Chelsie Schaal and Ashley MacQueen collected two hits each

Esperanza Takes Pair From Newport Harbor
In Game 1, Chelsey Anderson and Kelsea Roth combined in the 2-hit shutout. Jordyn Bohon, Chelsie Schaal and Kristin Scharkey each had two hits for the Aztecs in the 5-0 victory. In Game 2, Roth pitched a two hit shut-out and added a home run and 4 RBI in the 10-0 victory. Vanessa Weaver was 2-for-2 with a triple and 3 RBIs, while Stephanie Blakeslee was 2-for-2 with two doubles

No. 9 Aztecs Storm Back from 7-2 Deficit to Beat Los Alamitos, 8-7
After falling behind 7-2, OC Varsity No. 9 Esperanza rallied for six runs in the last three innings, including three in the bottom of the seventh, to beat rival Los Alamitos, 8-7. Kelsey Roth went 4-4 with a double and two RBIs to lead the 16-hit attack for the Aztecs

Two-Run Eighth Pushes No. 5 Aztecs Past Marina, 3-1
OC Varsity No. 5 Esperanza scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning to beat host Marina, 3-1. Freshmen Kelsea Roth and Alexis Borden limited the Vikings to three hits. Roth also drove in two runs to pace the Aztec offense. Esperanza moved to 2-0 in Sunset League play while Marina fell to 0-3.  Earlier in the week, the Lady Aztecs made their debut in the CIF-SS Division 1 Rankings at No. 10

Aztecs Win Consolation in Michelle Carew Classic
After dropping their first game in the Michelle Carew Classic to Vista Murrieta 5-2, the No. 8 Lady Aztecs won their next four games and in the process collected 45 hits and outscored their opponents 36-4, including a win in today's consolation final against Lakewood, 5-3. Jordyn Bohon and Kristin Scharkey were named to the All-Tournament team. Esperanza (12-4-1) begins Sunset League play against Fountain Valley on Thursday (4/10) at Esperanza High School

After Breaking into OC Varsity's Top Ten, No. 8 Esperanza Pounds Cypress, 11-0
After appearing in the OC Varsity Top Ten for the first time this season, the No. 8 Lady Aztecs pounded Cypress, 11-0. Trea Steele went 2-3 with a two-run double, a three-run home run and six RBIs in the win. Esperanza will begin play tomorrow in the Michelle Carew Classic, which runs Wednesday-Saturday at Peralta Park in Anaheim

Aztecs Lose in Extra Innings to Foothill, 7-6
Esperanza rallied for two runs in the bottom of the fifth and three runs in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings, but Foothill's Emily Koerner drove in Taylor Marino with a one-out double in the top of the eighth inning, and the Knights held on to beat Esperanza, 7-6. Earlier in the week, the Lady Aztecs moved up four places in the L.A. Times Top 25 Softball Rankings to number 12

Jackie Munoz had a triple, homer and seven RBIs and Kelsea Roth went 4 for 4 to lead a 15-hit attack for the Aztecs (5-2-1) in a victory over the Monarchs (8-2) at Thornton Park

Esperanza Takes Second Place in Brea Tournament
After defeating Orange Lutheran 5-4 on Friday night to earn a spot in the championship game against Capistrano Valley, Esperanza lost 6-5 in the tournament finale. Jackie Munoz gave the Lady Aztecs a 5-3 lead with a 3-run home run in the top of the 3rd inning. But the Cougars clawed back with two runs in the fourth inning and one in the sixth inning on a solo home run to earn the victory. Jordyn Bohon and Kristin Scharkey were named to the All-Tournament team

In Game One, Esperanza defeated La Habra 5-1. Chelsey Anderson scattered five hits and struck out twelve to earn the victory. Kailyn Johnson hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning.
