Johnson, Scharkey Named O.C. Register All-County First Team Selections;  L.A. Times All-Stars 
Seniors Kristin Scharkey (pictured left) and Kailyn Johnson (right) have been named First Team All-County, announced today by the O.C. Register.  Both were named to the All-Senior Team, and Scharkey was selected Senior of the Year. In addition, both players were named to the L.A. Times All-Star Team as well as All-CIF.

Esperanza had six players recognized as All-League performers by the league's coaches. Hart Ends Esperanza's CIF Playoff Run, 1-0
The Hart High of Newhall softball team keeps scoring one run per game during the Southern Section Div. I playoffs and pitcher Destiny Rodino (pictured) keeps making it stand up. This time, in a quarterfinal home game against Esperanza, the UCLA-bound senior responded with a 13-strikeout, no-hitter to push Hart into the semifinals with a 1-0 win.    More >>

Victory Over #3 El Modena Propels Lady Aztecs Into CIF Quarterfinals Against Nationally Ranked Hart
After an up-and-down regular season, Esperanza's improbable run through the CIF-SS Division I softball playoffs continued with a 3-0 victory over third-ranked El Modena. Alexis Borden (pictured) homered and pitched a 3-hit shutout. Next up for the Aztecs: a CIF quarterfinal matchup with nationally ranked Hart, the fourth seeded team in CIF-SS Division I.    More >>

Esperanza to Face #3 El Modena in CIF 2nd Round
The Aztecs, who had to win a wild-card game to get into the main draw, pulled off the biggest upset of the first round when they knocked off Mater Dei, ranked No. 1 in the county. The teams split a doubleheader earlier this season. Trea Steele (pictured) was named O.C. Register Player of the Week today following her 2-for-3, 3 RBI performance against Mater Dei.    More >>

Aztecs Advance with 6-4 Win Over Roosevelt
Brittany Virgoe went 3 for 4 with a double and four RBIs and Kelsea Roth (pictured) went 3 for 3 with a two-run homer in the third to lead a 16-hit attack for the visiting Aztecs in a victory over the Mustangs. Esperanza to Face Roosevelt in CIF Wild Card Game
The playoff brackets for the 2009 CIF Softball Championships were released today.  Esperanza's Lady Aztecs will square off against Big Eight League representative Roosevelt High School in a CIF-SS Division I wild card game to be held on Tuesday, May 19th at 3:15pm at Roosevelt High School in Corona. The winner will face Mater Dei in the first round on Thursday.  More >>

Aztecs Fall to Marina in Sunset League Finale, 9-0
#5 Marina clinched a share of the Sunset League title with the 9-0 victory over the #15 Lady Aztecs.  Kristin Scharkey (pictured) collected two hits for Esperanza. The Aztecs finished in fourth place, but are eligible to petition for a CIF-SS at-large berth in Division I. Playoff pairings will be announced on Monday at noon.   More >>

Edison pitcher Allyson Hecht allowed two runs, scattered six hits and struck out 13 as the Chargers (16-5, 4-2) beat the visiting #4 Aztecs (14-11-1, 3-3). Jasmine Lee (pictured) singled in the tying run in the fourth inning for the Esperanza, but the Chargers scored in the bottom of the ninth to get the win.   More >>

Lady Aztecs Split in Day Two of Carew Classic
Esperanza began the day by defeating Long Beach Wilson 9-3.  Kailyn Johnson went 2 for 3, including a grand slam during a six-run rally in the bottom of the first, and Kristin Scharkey went 2 for 3 with two runs and an RBI as the Aztecs overwhelmed the Bruins. In Game 2, El Camino (Oceanside) used a three-run rally in the top of the sixth inning to snap a 1-1 tie, and the Wildcats went on to beat the Lady Aztecs 4-1.     More >>

Third-ranked Los Alamitos scored six runs in the first two innings and went on to beat No. 6 Esperanza, 7-2, in a Sunset League softball game Thursday at Los Alamitos High. Kelsea Roth belted a line-drove shot over the fence in left-center field in the fourth.    More >>

Lady Aztecs Defeat Camarillo to Take 3rd Place in Prestigious Nike Faster to First Classic
Esperanza completed an impressive run through the Nike Faster to First Classic, defeating Camarillo, 4-3, in eight innings to claim third place in the competitive tournament that featured 24 top teams from six states. Kailyn Johnson hit a solo home run in the fifth to tie game 3-3. Madeline Sale drove in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Johnson, Kelsea Roth, and Trea Steele each collected two hits for the Lady Aztecs.  Alexis Borden, Johnson and Kristin Scharkey were named to the All-Tournament team.      More >>

Canyon Fights Esperanza For Trip To Finals
Canyon defeated Esperanza, 4-3, to reach the finals of the Nike Faster to First Classic. The game was called after six innings due to of the 1-hour and 50-minute time limit. The Lady Aztecs jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but Canyon scored the next four runs to take the lead. Kelsea Roth's solo home run cut the deficit to 4-3, but Esperanza wouldn't get another at-bat. Kristin Scharkey went 3-for-3 and scored two runs, while Kailyn Johnson went 2-for-2 with 2 RBIs.    More >>

Victory Over Pleasant Grove Propels Esperanza into Faster to First Semifinals Against Canyon
The Aztecs defeated Pleasant Grove, 3-1, in the quarterfinals of the Nike Faster to First Classic. Esperanza scored two runs in the top of the seventh and Alexis Borden scattered four hits to record the complete game victory as Esperanza  advanced to the semifinals by beating UCLA-bound pitcher Ally Carda and the Eagles (12-2). Aztecs Reach Quarterfinals of Faster to First Tourney
The first day of the Nike Faster to First Classic featured one upset after the other, but Esperanza came through unscathed to reach the quarterfinals with victories over Sunrise Mountain, 2-1, and Chino 8-1. In the win over Sunrise Mountain, Kailyn Johnson drove in the game-tying run with a double and scored on Kelsea Roth's double as the Lady Aztecs knocked off the Mustangs, ranked No. 24 in the nation. Chelsey Anderson pitched eight innings and gave up four hits. In game two, Alexis Borden picked up the win against Chino, as Johnson hit a two-run homer and Kristin Scharkey hit a three-run shot for Esperanza.    More >>

Esperanza Takes 3rd Place in Foothill Tournament
The Lady Aztecs built a 4-0 lead and held on to beat rival Los Alamitos 4-2 on Saturday to claim third place in the Foothill Roundtable Invitational. Pitcher Chelsey Anderson scattered eight hits and struck out seven to earn the complete game victory. Anderson, Kailyn Johnson and Vanessa Weaver were named to the All-Tournament team.    More >>

O.C. Varsity Softball Season Preview
Seven of the teams in the O.C. Varsity Preseason Top 10 are on the #8 Lady Aztec's schedule in 2009, including: No. 1 Canyon, No. 2 Mater Dei, No. 3 Marina, No. 5 Rosary, No. 6 Los Alamitos, No. 7 Beckman, and No. 9 El Modena. Several Esperanza players were recognized on Top Players lists, including: Kristin Scharkey Top Five Players, Kelsea Roth Top Underclassmen, and Kailyn Johnson, Vanessa Weaver & Alexis Borden Other Players to Watch.  In addition, the Aztecs were ranked No. 16 in CalHiSports preseason state rankings.   More >>

Lady Aztecs Return Six 2008 Post-Season Honorees
The 2009 Esperanza softball team will return six players who received post-season honors following a 2008 season that saw the Lady Aztecs win the Sunset League championship and advance to the CIF quarterfinals. Seniors Kailyn Johnson and Kristin Scharkey along with sophomore Kelsea Roth (pictured) earned First Team All-Sunset League honors, while senior Chelsey Anderson earned Second Team All-Sunset League honors. Sophomores Alexis Borden and Vanessa Weaver, along with Roth, earned a spot on the 2008 OC Register All-Freshman team. Roth was also named 2008 Sunset League Rookie of the Year. In addition,  Johnson was named Second Team All-CIF, while Scharkey earned Second Team All-County, First Team All-CIF and Second Team All-State Underclass honors.   More >>

Johnson Signs Penn State National Letter of Intent
Head coach Robin Petrini is proud to announce the first wave of athletes, including Aztec senior first baseman Kailyn Johnson, to sign National Letters of Intent to play softball for Penn State. "We are very excited about the power that Kailyn will bring to our lineup," Petrini said. "She has such a natural swing and the ball seems to simply jump off her bat. Scharkey Commits to Play at Northwestern
Northwestern head coach Kate Drohan announced today the signing of four future Wildcats, including Esperanza senior outfielder Kristin Scharkey, to National Letters of Intent. "Kristin can flat out fly and she will make a huge impact within our program on both sides of the ball. She is an offensive spark and sets the tone for the game," Drohan said. "Kristin also has a great compass and continues to impress us with her incredible work academically and on the softball field."   More >>

Anderson to Continue Softball Career at CSUF
Six high school players, including Aztec senior pitcher Chelsey Anderson, have signed National Letters of Intent to continue their softball careers at Cal State Fullerton beginning in the 2010 season the university announced on Friday. Anderson helped lead Esperanza to the Sunset League title as a junior, earning second-team All-Sunset League honors in 2008. She finished her junior season with an 11-3 mark in the circle in 95 innings, striking out 109 batters while walking just 21.   More >>
